kata-irc-bot | <alivxlive> Hello How I can run a container with kernel 2.6.32 in kata using docker, I tried my best but nothing works :( | 10:02 |
---|---|---|
kata-irc-bot | <graham.whaley> Hi @alivxlive - so, a v2.6.32 kernel is almost exactly 10 years old!!! that's a pretty old kernel (which no doubt is probably not maintained, updated, and hence full of security holes???). I suspect there are some key missing KVM features that Kata needs to work, so the likelyhood of running a v2.6.32 kernel I would guess is pretty low.... do you have a specific use case that requires that kernel? | 10:13 |
kata-irc-bot | <alivxlive> I have software was installed in ARM embedded device, What I have to do is running it under docker, but I found docker using the host kernel, and after a search I found kata can do what I need. | 10:26 |
kata-irc-bot | <graham.whaley> thx Ali. two questions - (1) Have you tried your software using the host (or kata) kernel version? (the kernel normally maintains backwards compatability, so your userspace software might work? (2) Are you running kata on an ARM host? | 10:28 |
kata-irc-bot | <alivxlive> First: I tried to run kata in AWS ARM EC2 server, but kata-runtime kata-check said "no compatible " The second option that I have to run it in my local machine till now there is no progress | 12:16 |
kata-irc-bot | <graham.whaley> Hi @alivxlive - I suspect the 'not compatible' is because maybe the AWS instances do not support virtualisation (if the instances are VMs for instance, I'm not sure if they support nested virtualisation). we should pull in @penny.zheng here, who is the ARM Kata expert :slightly_smiling_face: | 13:26 |
kata-irc-bot | <alivxlive> Great, Thank you @graham.whaley :slightly_smiling_face: | 13:27 |

kata-irc-bot | <eric.ernst> Aren’t there metal arm instances? | 15:45 |
kata-irc-bot | <graham.whaley> I'm not sure all ARM hardware supports virtualisation though either. | 15:48 |

kata-irc-bot | <katacontainers> @eric.ernst There are `a1.metal` instances with Graviton: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/now-available-bare-metal-arm-based-ec2-instances/. I don't know if there are any bare-metal Graviton 2 instances yet. | 18:53 |
