dhellmannttx: not sure if this is the best channel for this -- I've been thinking about project tagging, and starting to question the rationale of having them in the governance repository. They're either objective enough to qualify as simple documentation ("included in install guide") or subjective enough that I don't think we want the TC voting on them ("stable" or "mature" or whatever). I'll write up more details, but wanted to give you a14:34
dhellmann heads-up since it looks like you're working on the implementation some today.14:34
ttxThe spec stated taht we would still very much own them, even if we could delegate maintenance to subgroups14:36
ttxdhellmann: would you rather have them in some other repo atht we would own ?14:36
ttxdhellmann: I didn't want to duplicate the projects list14:37
dhellmannttx: I'm starting to think we don't need them at all.14:38
dhellmannThey're really just short-form for documentation we should be writing.14:38
dhellmann"included in install guide" is "look at the table of contents"14:38
dhellmannwe don't need to vote on that, it's right there in the docs14:38
dhellmannand for some of the tags that are not yet in the docs, they should just be in the docs14:39
ttxdhellmann: "included in install guide" might be an extreme case though14:39
dhellmannyeah, I need to look again, but I have not been able to come up with an example of any tag that I thought would both be objective and something the TC should vote on rather than having listed in documentation somewhere14:39
ttxdhellmann: "compute-base" for example would certainly not be project-maintained14:40
dhellmannthat's documented in the test matrix in project-config14:40
dhellmann*or* it could be in the documentation of the dependencies of projects that need compute-base14:40
ttxdhellmann: we also need to maintain them /somewhere/, if only to allow the project taxonomy browsing website to get its information from somewhere14:40
dhellmannif the nova project decides it wants to require designate, for example, that should just be in the nova docs14:40
dhellmannhaving a project taxonomy browsing website presumes we have tags, we shouldn't create tags just so we can build that website14:41
dhellmannbasically, I think we should all go work on the documentation instead of doing this, but I need to find a more detailed way to say that14:41
ttxclarity into which project has which tags is pretty critical imho14:42
dhellmannwell, in my vision, there are no tags anywhere at all14:42
dhellmannthe tags are just short-hand for things that should be more discoverable elsewhere14:42
ttxdhellmann: I'm implementing the spec we voted on, not inventing the next ietartion of it just yet14:43
dhellmannwe've come up with other uses for the tags *after* we decided we wanted them, but we can have all of those other things without tags14:43
ttxiteration*14:43
dhellmannttx: sure, my point was just that I'm going to propose we stop and so maybe you have something else to work on between now and tomorrow when we discuss that :-)14:43
ttxI don't work on it, so I'm fine :)14:44
dhellmannmaybe we can avoid implementing it completely14:44
dhellmannok. I'll send an email to the -dev list later today to start the discussion.14:44
ttxdhellmann: we just started to get everyone understanding tags, it would be unfortunate to suggest a 180° turn only one month in14:45
ttxbut then I'll wait for your post14:45
dhellmannttx: yeah, like I said, I think it'll turn out to be wasted effort better spent elsewhere, and avoiding that is part of the point of all of this change we're going through14:46
dhellmannmaybe I'm wrong, and missing something, but the more I looked at it last week the more this became clear to me14:46
