blippHey guys, I'm having problems setting up Trove manually on OpenStack Icehouse. `trove list` results in "ERROR: Unauthorized (HTTP 401)". I can imagine that it's because I don't have the users right in api-paste.ini and for the nova_proxy_admin parameters. Do you have guidelines for these settings? I posted log files and configuration on https://ask.openstack.org/en/question/45818/trove-trove-list-results-in-error-unauthorized-http-401/12:49
mikehn_setup the correct keystone auth details in api-paste.ini under keystone:authtoken12:49
blippok, I'll check this now12:52
mikehn_so how far is the integration with neutron ?12:58
mikehn_all new installations have neutron installed instead of plain old nova-network12:58
blippI am using Neutron, yes, but because of the issue with authorization I could not yet test Trove's features13:02
blippoh, nice, trove list doesn't fail anymore. I added admin_password = *** admin_user = trove admin_tenant_name = services to the keystone_authtoken section of _each_ of the configuration files, not just api-paste. Thanks for this hint, mikehn13:07

glucasSlickNik: any thoughts on this ^^ I'm inclined to wait for the stuff in the queue to merge and then do a single patch (well, one on client and one on trove) to basically s/slave/replica everywhere.15:19

esmuteo/18:04
amrithI stuck this on the agenda ... here comes a paste blast. Over the past several days I have seen some bugs being reported, and some changes being submitted for SuSE support. I don't think the review forum is where the community should debate the overall ramifications of supporting a new platform, and getting bug fixes for a platform we don't test seems problematic. I believe there needs to be a blueprint for SuSE support18:04
amrithand then we can prioritize not just code, but also reviews, testing, and CI changes if required.18:04
amrithWhat do others think?18:04
*** ViswaV has joined #openstack-trove18:05

iartarisifreyes: ping18:06
iartarisiI agree what amrith said basically, except for s/SuSE/SUSE/ ;)18:06
iartarisiI'm open to opening up a blueprint to track this18:07
amrithSoRRY18:07
vgnbkrA deeper question is "Is trove going to support every distribution of linux?"  If not, do we want to consider building a framework for distribution vendors to certify distros themselves?18:07
sgotlivif SUSE is important to someone we definitely need to support it18:08
sgotlivfor me RHEL and Fedora probably more important :-)18:08
vgnbkrSo then the Trove community will be taking on support for all 500 distributions?18:08
SlickNiksgotliv / vgnbkr: Yes, but there is a resourcing concern. We don't have resources to support / test every linux distro as part of the upstream CI.18:09
esmutehow are other openstack projects in terms of supporting other OSs besides debian/ubuntu?18:09
iartarisiFWIW SUSE is already supported by most of the other openstack projects. There's even an installation guide at: http://docs.openstack.org/icehouse/ for example.18:09
sgotlivno, I will verify that Fedora is working someone needs to care about SUSE18:09
amrithto be clear, I'm happy to work with ionut and folks on Trove and SUSE.18:09
amrithI just would like to make sure we understand the scope of this18:09
iartarisiamrith: +1 on defining a scope18:10
amrithas it is larger than a breadbox and smaller than world peace18:10
SlickNikesmute: Usually the interested parties (RedHat / SUSE) take on the onus of making sure that the project is working for their distro.18:10
sgotlivthat what I said18:11
vgnbkrSo then part of that needs to be having the gate test multiple distributions for each patch, otherwise support will just get out of date (as it has done with Fedora).18:11
sgotlivvgnbkr, I agree in general18:12
sgotlivI just have the same resource problem :-)18:12

glucasso changing the pexpect version doesn't help, the behavior is the same with pexpect 2.3 (the one on the ubuntu precise image) and the newer versions picked up by trusty and I presume wheezy.19:08

vigneshvarhi guys. I have just fixed a minor bug. I am new to the community and this is my first bug fix. https://review.openstack.org/#/c/112532/   Kindly review it19:29
SlickNikjedix: you should be using the trove command (from python-troveclient). The trove-cli command was part of the legacy trove client, which no longer exists.19:29
SlickNikjedix: Where are you seeing a reference to that? It's probably an outdated doc.19:29
jedixhttps://github.com/openstack/trove/blob/master/doc/source/dev/manual_install.rst19:31
jedixI just checked https://review.openstack.org/#/c/107363/5/doc/source/dev/manual_install.rst and it is indeed changed there.19:31
jedixSlickNik: is there examples of "trove create" with data?19:32
jedixI assume I can pick a <name>, but what's <flavor_id>?19:32
SlickNikjedix: you can do a "trove flavor-list" to get the list of flavors with ids that you can use for your trove instance size.19:34
jedixSlickNik: thanks19:38
jedixSlickNik: should I be using identity_uri in trove?19:39
SlickNikjedix: no you shouldn't need to. The new trove cli should just work once you have the appropriate OS_* env variables set (OS_AUTH_URL for the keystone URL in this case)19:44

david-lyleI have a multi-region question I hope some can answer20:22
david-lyleI can pass in a region_name to python-troveclient https://github.com/openstack/python-troveclient/blob/master/troveclient/client.py#L6920:23
david-lylebut then in trove-api, I seem to only pull the region from the config file for the service https://github.com/openstack/trove/blob/master/trove/common/remote.py#L9520:25
jedixSlickNik: do you have ot use the OS_* env?20:25
david-lyleI'm sure I'm missing something, but what?20:25
david-lylenote, I'm only testing in devstack with two nova regions20:25
david-lylebut I am getting the RegionAmbiguity exception20:26
david-lyleeven if I pass in the region_name to the client20:26
david-lyleI don't see how that value is ever used20:27
esmutedavid-lyle: do you have the second region setup in keystone?20:27
david-lyleI know this worked back in Havana, seems like yesterday20:27
david-lyleI just added an endpoint for nova using the keystone CLI20:28
david-lyleone is RegionOne (the default), the second is RegionTwo (my creation)20:28
esmuteok.. hmm20:29
david-lylehttps://github.com/openstack/trove/blob/master/trove/common/remote.py#L70 proves problematic20:29
david-lylebecause endpoint region is coming in as None20:29
SlickNikdavid-lyle: IIRC using the endpoints from the service catalog was something that was merged in icehouse / juno.20:31
david-lyleas it's only read from the conf.OS_REGION_NAME20:31
SlickNikdavid-lyle: before that, we were always using the endpoint from the config file.20:31
SlickNikdavid-lyle: Let me see if I can find the patchset where that changed.20:31
esmutemat-lowery worked on this. Perhaps he can tell you more information about it20:31
mat-loweryesmute: Thanks. Catching up on the messages.20:32
david-lylein get_endpoint it's looking in the service catalog, but only with the endpoint_region coming from CONF.os_region_name20:32
*** miqui has quit IRC20:33
*** Barker has quit IRC20:33
SlickNikdavid-lyle: Yes, that looks like a bug to me.20:35
SlickNikhttps://review.openstack.org/#/c/68015/ is the change I was referring to btw.20:35
vipulA single Trove install can only talk to one backend Nova region, iirc -- so we're not really multi-region aware20:36
mat-lowerydavid-lyle, SlickNik, esmute, vipul: What is the bug again?20:37
vipulnot sure -- it's been like that as far as i know20:37
vipulwe used to support multi-regions before?20:38
SlickNikvipul: Nope, but the client let's you pass in a region as a parameter.20:38
SlickNikvipul: I believe that's a copy-pasta bug with the client.20:38
esmutevipul: With mat-lowery change, we can create clients (nova, cinder, swift) that talks to other regions20:38
SlickNikProbably when we rewrote the client20:38
vipulesmute: sure.. but it's still a single region as defined by the CONF.. not dynamically chosen20:39
david-lyleso in a multi-region env, you have to have the endpoint region in the conf file?20:39
vipulyou'd have two Trove installs, each configured to point to their own Nova20:40
david-lylewell, unless you have a single region install and then it will pick it up dynamically20:40
david-lylethat seems odd20:40
david-lylebut ok, so is the fix for now to remove the option in the client?20:41
esmutevipul, david-lyle: yes.. the region is obtained from the conf.. at least for nova20:41
vipulSlickNik: is it an option as part of the 'trove create' call?20:43
mat-loweryhttps://review.openstack.org/#/c/68015/ was only to allow endpoint fetching from keystone catalog. but there is no extra functionality for fetching endpoints of other regions20:43
SlickNikdavid-lyle: Yes, I think so. Trove doesn't quite yet support a single install that can make use of a multi-region Nova.20:43
esmutedavid-lyle: yes.. or fix trove so that it is mult-region aware20:44
*** Barker has joined #openstack-trove20:44
david-lyleesmute: are there technical reasons blocking that? or just time and effort?20:44
mat-loweryI'm confused about the region in the cli and how it relates to what trove uses? any explicit regions in the cli calls would be per-operation region args...the region in the cli is just the trove endpoint itself20:45
vipulmat-lowery: yea that's what i thought --os-region-name would be used to pick the right Trove endpoint.. it would never be passed down to Trove20:45
david-lylethis is the http client20:46
SlickNikSo this is the region in the cli that david-lyle was asking about: https://github.com/openstack/python-troveclient/blob/master/troveclient/client.py#L6920:46
SlickNikone sec brb20:46
esmutewe havent really looked into multi-region for trove in depth so i am not aware of any technical blockers.. But i cant think of any reason beside more time and effort20:46
vipulseems like that region_name attribute is used to to parse the Trove endpoint.. https://github.com/openstack/python-troveclient/blob/master/troveclient/client.py#L23820:47
mat-lowerydavid-lyle: Trove (the service itself) doesn't do anything with --os-region-name (that I'm aware of). Are you saying it should?20:48
david-lylemat-lowery: perhaps a bad assumption on my part based on name20:49
mat-lowerySo david-lyle would it be better if Trove just figured out what region it was in and, by default, found collaborating services in the same region and didn't require this CONF.os_region_name?20:50
david-lylethe problem I'm seeing is: in a multi-region nova setup, I get a RegionAmbiguity exception when conf.os_region_name is not set, because there are two endpoints for nova that come back when sc.get_urls() is called20:50
david-lyleI mistakenly assumed I could disambiguate by passing in region_name20:52
david-lylethat seems to not be the case, which is ok20:52
mat-lowerydavid-lyle: I saw two ways to go here: take the first endpoint regardless of region or force the deployer to explicitly set one. I guess the third option would be "use same region as trove service"20:52
david-lylebut the behavior seems ambiguous and problematic in a multi-region env20:52
david-lylemat-lowery: what you said20:52
mat-lowerytrove has historically required all explicit URLs so requiring CONF.os_region_name at the time didn't seem like that much to ask20:53
david-lylewell actually, your first two ways could be an AND20:53
david-lyleI mean, if it's not set, take the first one20:53
david-lylethat wouldn't cause problems with custom nova backends because you'd have to have those values set already20:55
david-lylejust a thought20:55
mat-lowerySo perhaps it was a cop-out to force the user to pick a region with CONF.os_region_name. I actually still like it better than picking a random because of performance penalty for choosing the wrong region. Thoughts?20:56
mat-loweryI believe I copied Nova with its CONF.os_region_name flag btw.20:57
david-lylemaybe requiring it to be set is sufficient20:57
vipulit does introduce this wierdness where as soon as you create a new nova region.. Trove is busted20:58
david-lylewell that's non-optimal20:58
david-lyleok, if the value is required, I have a strange setup and all is good.  I understand the issue and can stop trying to set region_name in the client to fix it20:59
david-lyle:)20:59
mat-loweryvipul, david-lyle: Would always requiring CONF.os_region_name prevent this "oddness"?20:59
mat-loweryor does everyone like the "pick first one" approach?21:00
david-lyledoes pick one break if a new region is inserted before the existing nova?21:00
mat-loweryalways requiring CONF.os_region_name means that the addition of a new nova region won't all of a sudden cause ambiguous endpoint errors.21:00
*** tomblank has joined #openstack-trove21:00
david-lyleyes21:01
mat-lowerydavid-lyle: I'm not sure of any region ordering guarantees when searching the catalog.21:02
david-lylemat-lowery: me either, but if trove was defaulting to one region then switched, does that break things/21:02
david-lyle?21:02
mat-loweryyeah that would not be good.21:03
vipulmat-lowery: I think always requiring it is a lot more explicit, the less magic the better21:03
mat-loweryvipul: I agree. OK, so I'll file that bug now and look into changing it.21:04
mat-lowerydavid-lyle: So you can get around your issue with CONF.os_region_name right?21:04
