RichardRaseleyThere is no requirement to take a Swift cluster offline to rebalance, correct? I mean that would kind of defeat the purpose...01:02
notmynameRichardRaseley: correct01:02
*** stimble has quit IRC01:02
RichardRaseleyOK, that is what I thought - but someone I talked to seems to think you did and before I called them out I wanted to check my facts.01:02
notmynameRichardRaseley: all ring operations (adding, removing, rebalancing) can (and probably should) be done separate from your swift cluster. then take the resulting ring files and deploy them01:03
RichardRaseleyYou can just adjust the weight of a zone on the fly to fill / empty a zone.01:03
notmynameRichardRaseley: from an ops view, think of the ring as a static flat file that is updated and then deployed to all your machines01:03
RichardRaseleynotmyname: What do you mean by that? Have a testing cluster to make the changes?01:03
notmynameRichardRaseley: no, like on an "admin" server or even just on your desktop01:04
notmynameRichardRaseley: reason being, the ring operations could consume a bit of cpu time and affect client operations01:04
notmynameyou don't want to starve the other processes on the swift servers, for example01:04
notmynameRichardRaseley: you would update the weights, rebalance the ring(s), and then deploy the ring file(s) to the cluster01:05
RichardRaseleySo, I would take the ring files that are in production, bring them down to my workstation or dedicated server, do the operations, then upload back to the cluster nodes (preferably at the same time)?01:06
RichardRaseleyI get you.01:06
notmynameno, not quite01:06
*** jakkudanieru has quit IRC01:06
*** jakkudanieru has joined #openstack01:06
notmynameyou do operations on the ring builder files. from those, ring files are created01:07
RichardRaseleyI guess I don't get you then.01:07
notmynameyou only need to deploy the ring files. you can keep the ring builder files local to wherever you are doing your ring operations (although you should back them up!)01:07
notmynamenote: can != must01:07
RichardRaseleyOK, I see what you are saying.01:07
*** binyamin has quit IRC01:08
RichardRaseleyYeah, I have no idea what this person was talking about in saying that if a zone failed that you had to do an offline rebalance.01:09
RichardRaseleyI mean, that would defeat the purpose in a large infrastrucutre.01:09
notmynameRichardRaseley: further reading: http://swiftstack.com/blog/2012/04/09/swift-capacity-management/01:09
notmynameRichardRaseley: ya, that's totally wrong (at least with swift--I think other storage systems may require that)01:10

dAv1Dp3N74Hi guy09:24
dAv1Dp3N74I have a compute node09:24

melmothdAv1Dp3N74, not mandatory, but convenient09:38
melmothdAv1Dp3N74, http://docs.openstack.org/diablo/openstack-compute/admin/content/configuring-multiple-compute-nodes.html09:38
melmothlook for "Any server that does not have nova-api running on it needs this iptables"09:39
melmothif you dont run nova-api on your compute node, and want ubuntu images to be able to access the metadataserver (so they got ssh key by example)...09:39
melmoththen you have to manually set some itpables rules09:39
alex88dAv1Dp3N74, also, db sync should be done just one time09:42

hattwickI had this experience of installing openvswitch and vms starting with no interfaces a while back.  I'll have to find the file that I had to change, but for me the issue was kvm was still trying to use the old bridge controller.     You will have to create your new bridge, and new interfaces, and then make the change in KVM to use the new openvswitch.    Go to networkstatic.net….he has some great tutorials on this.14:08

s34nwhen I run stack.sh, it scrolls through extremely quickly and is all done in about 1 second.23:18
*** issackel_ has quit IRC23:18
s34nBut it clearly didn't do much. It created the stack user. But it didn't grab any packages, etc.23:19
