@arneme:matrix.orgStarlingX looks very interesting for us (a major telco in Europe) if we at some point create small geographically distributed datacenters connected to our 5G networks (with local 5G UPFs to break out traffic early). I am in the Research department of my company and I have been trying to set up an example deployment of a StarlingX cluster for a while now (with limited success) and wondered if there could be someone out there that has a StarlingX setup with a HA controller configuration and multiple worker and storage nodes that could help us getting something similar up and running? To us, the documentation available has not been enough for us to manage to do this. We are generating more questions than what we can find answers to in the documentation. What we have been able to do so far is to get a virtual AIO Simplex configuration up and running (using the vbox install scripts). We have also for a few days now tried to get a bare-metal AIO Simplex install up and running and have at least managed to boot the iso and run the Ansibel scripts to install software on controller-0 (on an Intel i7 desktop computer with 8 cores and 64GB of RAM). We do have some networking issues that we have to solve, but I guess we will manage to fix this soon. Here are some initial questions: 1) Will it be possible to add worker and storage nodes to a bare metal AIO-Simplex controller? 2) Is it possible to add worker nodes in a virtual AIO-Simplex or AIO-Duplex system? 3) How do we bring up worker nodes and add them to the controller (this does not seem to be mentioned anywhere in the documentation for release 8 and 9 (we found some traces in earlier releases).08:12

Hi arneme,
`1) Will it be possible to add worker and storage nodes to a bare-metal AIO-Simplex controller?` I don't think that's possible, only AIO-DX and Standard configurations can have compute / storage dedicated nodes. From the [description of AIO-SX](https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/StarlingX/Docs_and_Infra/InstallationGuides/virtual-AIO-Simplex): "The All-In-One Simplex (AIO-SX) deployment option provides all three cloud functions (controller, compute, and storage) on a single server."
`2) Is it possible to add worker nodes in a virtual AIO-Simplex or AIO-Duplex system?` It is possible on AIO-Duplex, process should be about the same as what's described in https://docs.starlingx.io/r/stx.5.0/deploy_install_guides/r2_release/virtual/controller_storage_install_kubernetes.html#id10 and https://docs.starlingx.io/deploy_install_guides/release/bare_metal/controller_storage_install_kubernetes.html#configure-worker-nodes. The difference of an AIO-DX from a Standard is that, on Standard configs, the controllers are only controllers (no compute capabilities), and on AIO-DX, the controllers are also computes. Both can have dedicated compute / storage nodes.
`3) How do we actually bring up worker nodes and add them to the controller?` Does https://docs.starlingx.io/r/stx.5.0/deploy_install_guides/r5_release/bare_metal/dedicated_storage_install_kubernetes.html#install-software-on-controller-1-storage-nodes-and-worker-nodes and https://docs.starlingx.io/r/stx.5.0/deploy_install_guides/r5_release/bare_metal/dedicated_storage_install_kubernetes.html#configure-worker-nodes help?

1) Yes, I did notice this in the documentation, but having a hard time understanding why that is (or should) be the case. It seems that you are not sure as well (ref: "I don´t think" :-) )
2) and 3) I see that you also found something in the old revisions documentation related to this, but how can I be sure that it still works this way in later revisions?
@arneme:matrix.org * Thank you so much for your answer. Unfortunately I am still puzzled.12:22

In addition, how do I install StarlingX on worker nodes? The R5 documentation you refer to only seems to explain how to include a worker node after it has been booted and installed with the proper SW. Do I use the StarlingX (controller) iso and ansible playbooks for this as well (if so, how do I set its personality to be a worker?)?
@ildikov:matrix.orgarneme: Thank you for reaching out and bringing your questions!15:06
