17:01:25 <spotz> #startmeeting diversity-wg 17:01:27 <openstack> Meeting started Mon Jun 17 17:01:25 2019 UTC and is due to finish in 60 minutes. The chair is spotz. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot. 17:01:28 <openstack> Useful Commands: #action #agreed #help #info #idea #link #topic #startvote. 17:01:30 <openstack> The meeting name has been set to 'diversity_wg' 17:01:33 <spotz> Helps to hit the right key 17:01:38 <spotz> #topic roll call 17:02:21 <SWDevAngel> I'm here! :) 17:04:07 <aprice> o/ 17:04:27 <spotz> And cmurphy is lurking about I think 17:04:51 <spotz> This will be a quick meeting as I was busy at work and took the weekend off from computers 17:05:04 <SWDevAngel> Good for you! 17:05:08 <spotz> #topic Action Items 17:06:04 <spotz> I have all the emails now for the folks interested in helping with mentoring so I'll get those out today. I spoke with Ell, but haven't reached out to Jill as I'd like to get everyone together to meet and pass over the baton so to speak 17:07:08 <spotz> And I just sent out the we're closing the woo list email. aprice I think you said you posted to the LInked in group but I didn't see it. I admitedly don't linked in well 17:07:37 <aprice> yeah, i posted an update there. a few folks liked it and Malini said she was excited to see the growth of the group beyond LinkedIn :) 17:08:17 <spotz> Oh boy:) 17:08:23 <aprice> i said i would leave it up until the end of this month i think. it's been swallowed by spam so i can't find it right now 17:08:38 <fungi> just lmk when you need help shutting the ml down and i'll be happy to take care of it 17:09:02 <spotz> thanks fungi, I figured I should warn first as we hadn't mentioned doing so last meeting 17:09:07 <fungi> sure 17:09:14 <fungi> there's no hurry 17:09:41 <SWDevAngel> I can't remember if we discussed this, but @aprice perhaps you could add a blurb about it into your swanky newsletter that you send out if you haven't already. 17:10:12 <fungi> oh, yeah, we've got a new osf newsletter due out this week 17:10:44 <aprice> SWDevAngel yeah, i can include something in there promoting both this meeting so folks can get involved and to use the foundation ml 17:11:40 <SWDevAngel> You could maybe have a "section" on diversity and include a blurb about if the user groups are planning on throwing a "party" or some kind of celebration in July for the "birth of the Foundation" (sorry - I can't remember what Ashley called it :) then as the OSF is committed to Diversity, it would be nice if the user group leaders could include that as part of their celebration. Whether a photo in the slide 17:11:40 <SWDevAngel> deck that you put together and share, with potentially some survey results included? (Am I making sense? I'm trying to type fast! ;) 17:12:34 <aprice> yeah, we are going to include the parties in the next newsletter under the foundation news. we are trying to not break up the newsletter into too many sections, so it will likely go under the OSF section 17:12:44 <spotz> hehe, yeah you want a slide with info about the meeting/ML:) 17:13:42 <SWDevAngel> A "Diversity" slide would be really cool. Info about the meeting. Where to find us. And maybe some survey results? Or whatever would make sense to share. 17:14:13 <SWDevAngel> Kind of a nudge... or reminder to the user group leaders to keep it top of mind. Because we KNOW that if we don't make a conscious effort, it doesn't happen! 17:14:47 <spotz> It'd be interesting to see the level of diversity at the meetups, I kow when'd I 'd make the drive to Austin I'd be the only female 17:17:11 <SWDevAngel> And if you think it's bad here, it's WAY WORSE in most of Europe! And India is pretty awful too from what I've seen of the pics coming out of those locations. Pretty much with every community across the board. I saw some pics of the Manchester/Nottingham K8s meetup and there had to be 200 people there.... I really don't think I saw a single woman! And 98% for sure white. It was shocking. I teased the organizers 17:17:11 <SWDevAngel> about removing the restriction that forbids women from entering the gates of the city before the next meeup or we might just have to swoop in on dragons! Lordy! 17:17:32 <fungi> i do wonder whether/how we track attendee diversity at ug meetings 17:17:51 <spotz> I don't think we do Fungi 17:18:03 <SWDevAngel> To date I haven't seen it tracked. I kinda keep a mental tab in my head. 17:18:13 <spotz> I think we're just happy when there are UGs and they actually meet 17:18:20 <fungi> indeed 17:18:22 <SWDevAngel> ha ha 17:18:47 <SWDevAngel> It definitely has broadened out though, so it's for sure not just about one specific technology like it used to be, 17:18:57 <SWDevAngel> more solution oriented. (which I think is a good thing. 17:19:30 <SWDevAngel> I find I use the term "community" more than "user group" in many contexts. 17:21:23 <spotz> Yeah and it doesn't narrow attendees down to just 'users' per say 17:21:59 <fungi> i try to use the term "community" in nearly all contexts 17:23:35 <spotz> I haven't spoken to Aeva yet, I think aprice made a good point last meeting that OSF might have a legal responsibility to act where Django doesn't but I did want to get some clarification on the wording changes. Just read an email about Safe Sport and I think they use the term Responding Party as the 'offender' 17:24:14 <spotz> So maybe for them it's the Reporting Party on the otherside? 17:27:14 <fungi> it's also worth noting that django's coc enforcement is performed by volunteer members of their community, not any legal entity, and that the document containing that volunteer group's procedures is buried in a git repo which isn't easy to find. for better or worse, we included ours in the same document where we publish our coc 17:28:17 <spotz> Yeah I think the legal entity is the catch between having to report and making it optional 17:28:56 <aprice> yeah 17:30:27 <spotz> Not really a true action item from last meeting but we submitted the 'lesson' plan for Grace Hopper for OpenStack's participation in Open Source Day there. We'll probably hit up Ashlee for swag donations again. 17:31:11 <spotz> If anyone is going to be there would love the help, it's going to be part Git and Gerrit lunch and learn and part making a Horizon theme for a humanitarian effort 17:32:29 <fungi> diablo_rojo_phon: were you going to grace hopper open source day? 17:33:21 <spotz> I think she's going to Nordic 17:34:40 <SWDevAngel> When is Grace Hopper? 17:35:52 <SWDevAngel> and where? 17:36:07 <fungi> #link https://ghc.anitab.org/calendar/2019-grace-hopper-celebration/ 17:36:17 <fungi> "October 1-4, 2019 in Orlando, FL" 17:36:32 <fungi> (usa) 17:36:35 <SWDevAngel> Thanks. 17:36:38 <SWDevAngel> Oh wow. Florida. 17:36:53 <spotz> he's faster then me looking through email:) 17:37:13 <fungi> at least it'll be starting to cool off there by october, but still orlando is a pit of misery 17:37:16 <SWDevAngel> Thanks. I could have googled it too. Just thought someone might have it on the top of their head. 17:37:30 <SWDevAngel> Yeah, I haven't been there in FOREVER. 17:37:43 <SWDevAngel> I suppose if you had kids (and brought them) it could be fun. 17:37:52 <fungi> be prepared for oppressive humidity 17:37:58 <spotz> The convention center is HUGE so at least duing the day you don't have to go out unless you want lunch somewhere else 17:38:27 <spotz> I'm bumming a room at a friend's house and most likely taking 3 days vacation for travel and OSD 17:38:29 <SWDevAngel> Yeah, that humidity is a real thing. (OMG hair!) Anyway, I digress. I will mostly likely NOT be there. But I've always wanted to go to that conference. 17:39:25 <spotz> It's huge and a lot of OpenStack related companies have been there in the past but except for the year Egle did the session no one has ever lent us mentors 17:39:30 <SWDevAngel> OMGosh I don't know a single person that lives in Orlando. How funny. I know I'm not doing it justice, but I always associate it with conference and mouse-related activities. 17:40:34 <spotz> Mouse or Universal:) But haveing lived in Florida I have friends in Orlando and my nephew is in College there 17:40:56 <spotz> Any ways.... I think that's everything for actions 17:41:01 <SWDevAngel> I was only asked to go there once to that event, to be a guest anchor on TheCUBE. They realized like a week before that they were going there with an all-male staff. This was back years ago when they only had an all-male staff. So they asked me to join them for the conference. It was too short notice and I had a conflict. Pretty funny though. 17:41:18 <spotz> #topic Open Discussion 17:41:29 <spotz> Anyone have anything else? 17:41:44 <spotz> SWDevAngel: it's going to be like 20k people this year 17:41:51 <SWDevAngel> Wow! AWESOME! 17:41:52 <fungi> i have nothing else 17:42:27 <SWDevAngel> me neither. I'll be at DevOpsDays Amsterdam and Containers Today, and then the container summit the following week in London... in case anyone else is at those events. :) 17:42:33 <spotz> Probably my last year, unless it goes back to Houston and I can combine with Regionals 17:42:54 <spotz> Nope I'm in wacky weather Texas 17:43:05 <spotz> Ok lets all have 18 minutes back 17:43:08 <spotz> #endmeeting
