17:02:11 <openstack> The meeting name has been set to 'diversity_wg'
17:02:50 <spotz> #topiic Roll Call
17:03:17 <fungi> ahoy!
17:04:25 <elvira> hi! It's my first time here. I contribute to neutron in openstack and was curious about the meeting o/
17:04:29 <SWDevAngel> Hi
17:04:41 <spotz> Weelcome elvira!
17:04:52 <spotz> Hey fungi and SWDevAngel
17:05:10 <SWDevAngel> Hi Spotz. Sorry I'm late. I was just wrapping up a call with Rain! WHOOOOHOOOO! :)
17:05:15 <SWDevAngel> And yes, BIG thank YOU!
17:05:35 <spotz> SWDevAngel: I expect presents:) And you're welcome so glad it worked out for you both:)
17:05:52 <fungi> rain's awesome indeed
17:05:55 <SWDevAngel> YES! :) For sure! :)
17:05:58 <spotz> #link https://etherpad.opendev.org/p/diversity-wg-agenda
17:06:23 <spotz> We really don't have any agenda items on the page but posting for elvira
17:06:30 <SWDevAngel> OMGosh it's possible I've never been so excited about onboarding anyone before! Even on day one they're knocking it out of the park! :)
17:06:53 <elvira> thanks spotz!
17:07:07 <spotz> Matt McCuen was supposed to join us from Airship but don't see him
17:07:20 <spotz> I'm trying to fix my typos as I see them:)
17:08:20 <spotz> Ok I just pinged him, found him in Opendev
17:09:39 <spotz> We are still working on finding the right home for the Stance. The main thing is thhatt it's not editable by anyone. Fungi suggested adding it simiilar to the CoC
17:10:45 <spotz> The word list #link https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Diversity/Inclusivity should of course be easily edited so we can keep it up to date
17:11:53 <fungi> speaking of which, i brushed up the git master branch entry there last week after going hunting in the git mailing list discussions for any recent activity around it (tl;dr there hasn't been much still)
17:12:51 <spotz> I like the fancy name for OpenDev:)
17:14:19 <fungi> ahh, "the opendev collaboratory" has been its full name, it's just not often written out
17:14:30 <spotz> The language workstream within the INI has been collecting words and their suggestions into a spreadsheet which is bit unweildy to add to if you have a lot of words to add:(
17:14:38 <spotz> Never saw it before!
17:15:20 <SWDevAngel> The heading is cool too. Diversity/Inclusivity (for some reason I expected it to say Diversity/Inclusion). I like that more.
17:15:44 <spotz> As a fresh set of eyes, elvira feel free to let us know if we're missing any thing or alternatives. The stance as far as I know is only in emails for not
17:15:44 <fungi> well, Diversity is an article category there, the article name is inclusivity
17:15:55 <SWDevAngel> Yeah it's cool
17:16:31 <elvira> as far as I've read it looks nice for me
17:18:04 <spotz> A little history about the group as I'm not sure how long you've been contributing. We used to have the Women of OpenStack which was a community run group. Around the time of the Mitaka cycle the Diversity and Inclusion WG was formed within the board.
17:18:34 <fungi> though i think it was initially just the "diversity working group"
17:18:44 <elvira> I arrived 6 month ago, so not that long. =)
17:18:58 <spotz> the D&I WG did the first D&I survey and WoO ran with a few things we learned from it and thhe WG went inactive
17:19:40 <spotz> As Diversity as a whole became more of a focus I broughht back the WG and was also running WoO whhich diidn't make much sense so we combined the 2 groups
17:20:03 <spotz> The WG does report to thhe board so we hhelp with all OIF projects and not just OpenStack
17:21:06 <spotz> Two years ago we did a second survey and while we miigght be due for another one in the next year or so last year we tokk the mission from the Board to write a stance and help the projects implement more inclusive wording
17:21:44 <elvira> That's nice! Is this glossary going to be introduce in the projects themselves? I mean, are the branch names and so going to change?
17:22:05 <elvira> Just curious on that, I also understand there must be problems with refactoring all of that
17:22:14 <fungi> whether and when these recommendations are implemented in projects is up to the leadership of each project to determine
17:22:18 <spotz> elvira: So we make recommendations, but the technical side iis left to the various technical bodies
17:23:05 <fungi> elvira: so since you said you mainly contribute to neutron, that's probably something you should be asking the neutron project team lead and the openstack technical committee
17:23:41 <elvira> Oh I see
17:23:44 <elvira> thanks!
17:24:06 <fungi> the situations within each project are obviously going to present unique challenges, and the leaders of those projects are in the best position to be able to start mappnig out what to change and how
17:24:17 <spotz> We reralize OpenStack as a whole will take longer rto make all needed changes just by size and scope but as fungi mentioned doing sometthihng with neutron or airshhip can be done in theory quuicker
17:24:39 <spotz> Some day I will not have a keyboard that adds to my typoing!
17:25:14 <elvira> Yay. It makes sense. I also think that the projects with more density on diverse/diverse-friendly people will be easier to discuss and change first
17:25:28 <fungi> basically the document we're talking about getting published on the foundation site is a statement of support from the foundation board of directors, which says that they see this as an important issue and are in favor of projects devoting as much effort to it as makes sense
17:26:05 <elvira> fungi: awesome!
17:26:16 <fungi> the board doesn't govern technical decisions within projects, so isn't in any position to tell them what to do there
17:27:24 <spotz> Whichh is why we also didn't work on the word suggestions until asked for a list during the Forums
17:27:42 <fungi> the glossary of suggested replacement terms linked earlier came about in part because the openstack technical committee asked us to provide them with suggestions to pass on to openstack projects, but it's of course intended to be useful to any project as a resource
17:28:30 <spotz> I believe we had someone from StarlingX at the session but otherwise OpenStack.
17:28:54 <fungi> yep, pretty sure mary from starlingx joined
17:28:56 <spotz> Part of our work is also making suree the othher projects realize we're there for them as well and not just OpenStack
17:29:32 <spotz> And that goes back to the fact we have a Board charter so we're not just an OpenStack entity
17:31:26 <spotz> So being part of the group is a great way to meet folks from othher communities. In person we generally have some type of sponsored social or lunch and then something unofficial and selfpaid
17:32:54 <elvira> Nice! It looks interesting, indeed. I've had to use Zuul these days, but the other projects are still a mistery to me. I'm glad to know them more, though :)
17:33:27 <SWDevAngel> Wow. Spotz and Fungi that was an awesome retrospective! :) Thanks for the history reminder. (And wow, it makes me realize how long I've been part of this community! :) :)
17:34:20 <SWDevAngel> And Hi elvira! Welcome! :) Fun fact... I ran the first ever Zuul meetup. It was in San Francisco in..... I'm gonna guess 2016??? Maybe 2015?
17:34:35 <spotz> hehe fungi probably is the senior member of the group in that regards. I was an operator of Grizzly, but contributor starting with Mitaka
17:34:58 <fungi> yesterday i submitted a change to clean up something i forgot to fix in 2012
17:35:20 <SWDevAngel> I remember Spencer presenting, and Jim Blair sitting in the back just smiling so big, to see this project get some light shined on it. :)
17:35:40 <spotz> Oh boy if everything breaks we know why:)
17:35:47 <SWDevAngel> ha ha
17:36:09 <SWDevAngel> I think I joined just before Havana. Yes, Fungi definitely was already part of the community then.
17:37:46 <elvira> wow! I'm really a newbie then
17:38:02 <fungi> we need new people as much as we need old people
17:38:06 * fungi feels older by the day
17:38:44 <SWDevAngel> ha ha! This! ^^^
17:38:50 <spotz> Which is why I tried to make Trivia night newcomer friendly!
17:39:05 <elvira> Is there a trivia night?!
17:39:11 <elvira> omg I know nothing
17:39:17 <spotz> fungi and I are almost always about if you ever need anything
17:39:28 <spotz> We held a social during the PTG
17:40:22 <spotz> We could see about doing more just to get folks together until we can travel again even without prizes. Someone had also suggested Pictionary:)
17:40:33 <elvira> True! I saw it but I was kinda shy to join, sorry!
17:41:12 <spotz> Well that's also why we're here. If I run into you at an event and you look lonely I'll invite you to whatever meal/activity I'm heading too:)
17:41:22 <fungi> yeah, i suppose ptg was a good opportunity to reach critical mass, but regular trivia get-togethers could be a thing if people were interested in helping put them on
17:41:41 <fungi> virtual get-togethers i mean
17:42:08 <spotz> Finding non-OIF questions while easier then making OIF ones will eventually dry up
17:42:21 <fungi> or you end up recycling them
17:42:55 <fungi> wit the new "openinfra live" effort, maybe the foundation would want to host a game show ;)
17:43:03 <fungi> i'll mention it to the organizers
17:44:17 <spotz> So yeah we have the more serious side of surveys and seeing how we're doing but having fun and getting people to feel included
17:45:25 <elvira> nice! Is there anything I can do to help? :)
17:48:04 <spotz> If there's anything you find to go on the word list, help initiate the conversations within Neutron, help welcome other new community members. I think Naming will be our ongoing thing for a while but we should start looking for another project as well whetther it's a new survey, running socials, etc
17:49:11 <spotz> I left the itinerary open today expecting Matt to show up, but we meet once a month. If we have somethingg with a tight timeframe like when we were working on the last survey's questions we meet more often
17:50:48 <fungi> also sometimes we do video/voice meetings instead of irc
17:50:54 <elvira> ok!
17:51:24 <spotz> Yeah we got out of doing them, we should start them back up
17:55:10 <elvira> I will think about the words used in neutron to see if there's something else. I'm not sure how much impact I can have to start a discussion on the changes, though. I will try to think of a way.
17:56:07 <spotz> elvira: If you need help we'll help you get started:)
17:56:44 <elvira> yay thanks
17:57:43 <spotz> Ok 3 more minutes, we've pretty much been doing Open Discussion but anyone have anything they want to bring up?
18:00:13 <spotz> Ok we're at time:)
18:00:20 <SWDevAngel> Not me. I'm good. :)
18:00:29 <spotz> Thanks everyone for coming!
