19:59:37 #startmeeting kolla 19:59:38 Meeting started Mon Nov 10 19:59:37 2014 UTC and is due to finish in 60 minutes. The chair is larsks. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot. 19:59:39 Useful Commands: #action #agreed #help #info #idea #link #topic #startvote. 19:59:41 The meeting name has been set to 'kolla' 19:59:41 o/ 19:59:47 #topic rollcall 19:59:47 afternoon larsks 19:59:50 Hiya! 19:59:52 hello 20:00:18 sdake is feeling ill today. going to wait a couple more minutes to see if anyone else shows up. 20:00:18 wow all 3 of us 20:00:34 still summit-tired 20:00:58 Totally. 20:01:08 i'm here 20:01:46 larsks: how was the exit row? 20:02:01 Lovely! Of course they asked me about my boot, but they let me stay. 20:02:07 yay 20:02:46 Well, I guess this is it. 20:02:48 #topic agenda 20:03:02 We have a really short agenda today: 20:03:04 * Summit summary 20:03:07 * Review milestone #2 scheduling 20:03:09 * Open Discussion 20:03:10 Unless anybody wants to add anything. 20:03:30 #topic Summit summary 20:03:53 So, we had a design session at the summit, and there was a rhel atomic + docker presentation that used our work. 20:04:09 I was at both, and danehans was also at the design session. Was anyone else at either? 20:04:37 * larsks listens to the crickets for a bit. 20:05:02 All righty then. So, a brief summary of the design session: 20:05:30 Folks were generally interested in what we're trying to do. The TripleO folks were there and were interested in how TripleO could leverage the work we're doing with containers. 20:05:52 There was some talk about whether or not we should bother trying to containerize the compute service at this point. I can see reasons to go either way. 20:06:16 There are a few other folks out there working with similar goals (Angus Selkeld and Sam Yaple that I'm aware of) 20:06:41 Sam is interested in getting involved with us, provided he doesn't run screaming after looking at our existing images... 20:07:11 Jlackbocki's presentation was packed, and some folks at kolla-related questions at the end, so I'm glad I was able to make it. 20:07:19 And that's pretty much it for the summit...unless there are questions? 20:07:45 what were some of the questions that people asked at james' presentation 20:08:01 was there an etherpad for the design session? 20:08:32 There was an etherpad for the design session, although it only saw limited use: 20:08:34 #link https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/kolla-design 20:09:06 I talked with a few folks after jlabocki's presentation about the limitations we've run into with Kolla, and about some of the potential solutions. 20:09:47 Angus (Selkeld) has submitted some kubernetes patches to make k8s work better in openstack -- specifically, adding support for neutron load balanceers, which solves the "how do I expose a service externally" question when running k8s on openstack. 20:10:46 I also talked with some folks about handling image configuration...actually, that was one of the other topics from the design session: where to draw the line between runtime/build-time configruation. 20:10:50 *configuration 20:11:18 There was a suggestion that maybe rather than releasing a set of images, what we should release is a set of image-building tools, and then people would "bake" configuration into their iamges locally. 20:11:45 that's an interesting idea 20:11:47 Stuff that came up included things like etcd/puppet/hiera/consul/etc. 20:12:32 rhallisey: the idea behind it was that there are so many knobs in openstack that it's not possible to make choices that will make everybody happy, and that some of those choices (e.g., cinder backend) would require fundamentally different images. 20:12:56 I think producing a set of images with defaults that can be used for setting a PoC environment quickly is still a worthwhile goal... 20:13:42 Okay then. 20:13:44 agreed, I just get the feeling we can come off as another installer 20:14:25 Right. I think/hope we can be something more than that (if nothing else, an exploration of how to make use of containers for distributing a complex set of linked software) 20:15:23 Okay, moving on. 20:15:31 #topic Review of milestone 2 scheduling 20:15:57 We currently have milestone 2 scheduled for november 21st. 20:16:01 Does that still make sense to people? 20:16:12 I know what with the summit and all that we have been busy with other things. 20:16:57 I think it's fine 20:17:07 jpeeler jrist any opinion? 20:17:24 I can't really comment since I'm not currently signed up for anything 20:17:28 Fair enough. 20:17:32 yeah, i thought it was set far out in advance originally with the summit in mind 20:17:34 ...yet! 20:17:42 All right, leaving it at 11/21, then. 20:17:52 So that's it for the agenda. 20:17:52 jrist, I have 2, you can take horizon or trove 20:17:55 #topic open discussion 20:18:27 So, with the summit over I am going to have to focus more time on my primary responsibilities and less time on containers, shiny though they may be. 20:18:30 rhallisey: I'll take a look 20:18:37 larsks, have you used your heat templates with the juno repos? 20:18:56 rhallisey: Not yet. I'm hoping to update them to fedora 21/juno this week. 20:19:05 Or at least F20/juno. 20:19:25 I have not yet been able to get my environment working 20:19:41 larsks, so I may ping you for some help 20:19:54 if that's ok 20:19:58 rhallisey: absolutely! 20:20:05 cool thanks 20:20:18 I'm going to start poking at that and at kubernetes > 0.3 this week if I can manage my time effectively :) 20:21:01 Okay, well, thanks for showing up everyone! 20:21:19 #endmeeting
