If anyone has a few minutes I'd appreciate a vote for my presentation 15:18:26 <PagliaccisCloud> https://www.openstack.org/summit/shanghai-2019/vote-for-speakers/#/24260 15:19:29 <ykarel> #link https://www.openstack.org/summit/shanghai-2019/vote-for-speakers/#/24260 15:19:41 * ykarel will check 15:19:45 <PagliaccisCloud> Also if anyone wants to contribute anything to the talk (should it make it through voting) or would like for me to add a specific project just email me tribecca [at] tribecc [dot] us 15:24:19 <ykarel> #topic volunteer for next meeting 15:25:35 <PagliaccisCloud> i'll do it \o 15:26:39 <ohsnap> can anyone recommend a good book for learning openstack from the ground up? it seems like no matter how many videos i watch or how many times i go over the documentation i feel like i just dont feel comfortable standing up a prod environment 15:27:21 <ohsnap> like if/when something breaks i dont even know where to begin tshooting 15:27:41 <PagliaccisCloud> ohsnap: OpenStack for Architects is a good one https://www.amazon.com/Openstack-Architects-Michael-Solberg-ebook/dp/B017XSFKFQ 15:27:53 <ohsnap> cool thanks :) 15:28:01 <ykarel> #action PagliaccisCloud to chair next meeting 15:28:37 <PagliaccisCloud> you might also want to reach out to spotz on IRC. She taught OpenStack for a couple of years & might have some courses to recommend that cover troubleshooting 15:29:07 <spotz> PagliaccisCloud: let me read:) 15:29:16 <PagliaccisCloud> oh hai! :D 15:30:33 <spotz> ohsnap: Let me see if I've got anything really troubleshooting related. I used to pick up things at Summit so there might be something along those lines. Also there's an openstack-operators channel 15:31:52 <spotz> ohsnap: Is there any area in particular you're having an issue? 15:36:02 <openstackgerrit> Merged x/packstack master: Remove legacy ram/disk/core filter https://review.opendev.org/672499 15:37:24 <rdogerrit> Sorin Sbarnea (zbr) proposed config master: WIP: Make ovb-manage install_openstack_deps distro aware https://review.rdoproject.org/r/21463 15:38:49 <ohsnap> spotz: well ive deployed it a few times over the last few releases usually using RDO / packstack / tripleo but i feel like when using puppet and ansible i miss out on really understanding how all of the different pieces fit together 15:39:05 <ohsnap> but then ive heard people say in talks, and read peoples guides that say 'never try to deploy openstack by hand' 15:39:38 <ohsnap> im like.. well... if i don't do it manually a few times i feel like im always missing big chunks of my understanding 15:39:58 <PagliaccisCloud> i disagree w/ that last statement ohsnap. every admin worth their salt should go through manual deployment at least once to understand how all of the different components fit together 15:40:32 <PagliaccisCloud> in fact i'd argue that that's where you learn a good 75% of troubleshooting 15:41:23 <spotz> ohsnap: Yeah my most popular courses were the build by hand ones. And as PagliaccisCloud said you learn the most by troubleshooting 15:42:24 <spotz> Maybe start with an install by hand not using a deployer, get a feel for the networking and then choose the best installer that meets your needs. The different deployment projects are getting closer and closer in methodology 15:43:44 * ykarel agree with spotz 15:44:24 <spotz> Documentation is sooo much better then the first installation I ever did:) 15:50:14 <ykarel> ok i think we can close, the discussion can go outside of meeting. Thanks all 15:50:29 <ohsnap> thanks all, will definitely give a manual deployment a shot. looking to stand up an env that i can do a lot of VDI testing with vmware/xen/qemu. looking to build out a datacenter for our clients. if you think of any good courses/books or even consultants/providers please pm me any info that i can present to my boss 15:51:08 <ohsnap> we're getting all of the power situated in our new building and have ordered a bunch of racks and gear so ill need to have something going in the next few months 15:53:05 <ykarel> #endmeeting
