kbringardjoking aside though, I've run into a similar issue19:18
kbringardwhere the _base images are cached "forever", so if you ever end up with an image ID which is the same as a previously cached one, the backing file for the VM is wrong19:19

kbringardnhm: personally we bootstrap19:47
kbringardmeaning, base image loads up user-data which has shell scripts to dynamically load the application19:47
nhmkbringard: Do you guys have any mechanisms to verify that applications work with different versions of the base images?19:48
kbringardjust a staging environment19:48
nhmkbringard: one of the things I want to do is verify that a given OS/Application work together and be able to roll back easily if updates mess things up.19:48
kbringardyea, we leave old iterations of images available19:49
kbringardso developer A knows that his application will always work on X ami19:49
kbringardsince it's been tested and put into production19:49
kbringardthen in the stage environment we provide new images with updated packages19:49
kbringardso they can test their applications19:49
kbringardif it works, then the apps can be migrated to the new AMI in production19:50
kbringardbut I mean, ymmv19:50
kbringardthat's just how we've decided to do it19:50
kbringardwe felt it was worth it to logically separate image creation and applications19:50
nhmDo you actually copy the application data in, or just remotely mount it?19:50
kbringarddepends on the application19:50
kbringardsometimes it's EBS volumes, but most of the time it's an exported nfs mount19:51
nhmon our compute clusters we use modulefile and remotely mount all the apps.  It's alright, but not without limitations.19:51
nhmJust NFS mounts for everything here, unless it's scratch space which is usually more exotic.19:51

kbringardpgregory: there should be something in the nova-network.log20:10
kbringardif it's stuck in networking, 9/10 times it's because of an issue in the network controller20:10
vishyjaypipes: sure thing20:10
kbringardwhich I know sounds obvious, but with openstack, you never know :-p20:10
nhmpgregory: when I mentioned earlier that I had to clean out the network and fixed_ips tables in the database, it was to solve that problem.20:11
pgregorynhm: since then I've completely wiped everything and started again trying to do it with the Ubuntu packages20:11

kbringardpgregory: did you apt-get install vlan?20:15
kbringardit doesn't seem to be a dependency in the compute debs, but it's required if you're using vlan mode20:15
pgregorynope, following a tutorial on another page, didn't show that.20:15
kbringardyea, add that and try again20:16
pgregoryI've tried to switch the nova.conf to use FlatManager, does that mean it shouldn't need vlan?20:16

kbringardah, there you go20:18
vishyand FlatManager is pretty useless without a bunch of manual setup20:18
vishyFlatDHCPManager is the way to go if you don't have vlans20:18
pgregoryvishy: and I don't suppose that's as simple as issuing a nova command is it?20:18
pgregoryaargh20:18
nhmvishy: yeah, it took me like a week to properly get that lesson through my head. ;)20:18
pgregoryI don't know what I want, all I *need* is to get this thing running so I can prove it's suitability to the task.20:19
pgregoryI don't have an preference (or indeed particular understanding) of the different network modes, what I'd like is a simple step by step set of instructions that actually works, unlike the 3 different sets I've tried thus far.20:20

kbringardsadly I missed it :-/20:24
pgregoryI don't have a funky setup, I have (had) a simple clean install of Ubuntu Server 10.10, and followed the tutorials, and nothing works, it's a 'mare.20:24
kbringardbut I'm just giving you a hard time20:25
Ryan_Lanegenerally networking fails because the network node can't assign an IP20:26
kbringardsince people seem to be alive, I have a couple of hopefully quick questions20:26
Ryan_Lanepgregory: how did you create the network?20:26
pgregoryRyan_Lane: I just followed the steps in that page.20:27
kbringard1) I heard that live migration of KVM hosts was bugged... I followed the docs on how to set it up (nfs mounted instances directory, etc) but migration seems to be failing20:27
kbringardis that the case, or am I just (most likely) being dumb20:27
nhmpgregory: in /var/lib/nova there is a file called nova.sqlite that you can modify with sqlite3 if you install it.  I'm guessing you are using that as the DB since it looks like your guide didn't have you setup mysql or postgresql.20:27
pgregoryRyan_Lane: although I've tried tonnes of other 'stuff' since, so it's probably all buggered up now anyway.20:27
Ryan_Lanethis blog post is seriously old20:27

nhmkbringard: I've been meaning to try it but haven't had time yet.  I'll let you know if I get a chance.20:28
kbringardOct '10 is probably Bexar or maybe even Austin related20:28
Ryan_Laneit doesn't even have the commands for creating the network20:28
Ryan_Lanepgregory: you trying to do a single node, or multiple nodes?20:28
kbringardI've had decent luck with this20:29
kbringardhttp://fnords.wordpress.com/2010/12/02/bleeding-edge-openstack-nova-on-maverick/20:29
pgregoryRyan_Lane: but surely, if it's using Ubunity 10.10 and the Ubunitu 10.10 packages, it shouldn't matter how old it is?20:29
Ryan_Laneyes. it does20:29
kbringardbut, you can't necessarily just follow it, you have to understand what it's doing20:29
Ryan_Lanebecause this is a fairly new project. things change dramatically20:29
Ryan_Laneand the packages are coming from the ppa, not from the distro20:29
pgregoryRyan_Lane: all I'm trying to do is a simple setup, where I can launch multiple instances on a single server, first (simple) steps.20:29
