Leanderhello all11:45
Leanderi have a quick question11:45
Leanderif i have various compute nodes11:45
Leanderdo i need to declare each one of them in the keystone endpointTemplate list?11:46
*** rkukura has joined #openstack11:47
KiallLeander: no, you declare the API services as endpoint templates11:53
LeanderKiall: even in multi-host configuration?11:53
Kiallyea11:54
*** betodalas has joined #openstack11:54
KiallTypically you would just have 1 endpoint per service, per region.. and say you had 2x nova-api servers, you would loadbalance between them11:55
*** derekh has quit IRC11:56
Leanderso i would have to do this "keystone-manage endpointTemplates add <REGION> nova [ips..]" for each compute node. Btw, nova = "keystone-manage service add nova compute "Nova Compute Service""11:57
*** alonswartz has joined #openstack11:57
KiallNo - 1 endpointTemplate for "nova" per region, not per compute node11:58
*** FallenPegasus has left #openstack11:58
Leanderok, so the load balancing would be kind of automatic, since the request will be redirected to that particular compute node's nova-api right?12:00
KiallI think your're mis-understanding how the services tie together :)12:03
Kiallnova-api is not required on every compute node, except when using multi-node networking, and even in that case, you should consider those nova-api's to be "special" since only a tiny fraction of it is used.12:03
KiallIn essex, the part used has been split into a new service so it can be installed on its own12:03
KiallAnyway - the only nova-api keystone etc should know about is the one on your controller node12:04
Leanderwell, i'm setting up a multi-host environment12:04
Leanderi have the controller and two compute nodes12:05
Kiallmulti-node networking != multiple compute nodes12:05
Kiallmulti-node networking is where you choose to install nova-network on each compute node, rather than having all the compute nodes share a single nova-network instance12:05
Kialluksysadmin, i seem to remember you having a blog post that explained how all the services tie together?12:06
Leanderwell, i'm trying to develop my install script based on the scrips here: https://github.com/managedit/openstack-setup12:07
Leanderand i see that each compute node has its own nova-api and network12:07
KiallYes, My scripts make some assumptions about how you want to install everything, they assume you have 2 nics per server, that you have VLAN capable switches, and that you want multi-node networking.12:08
Leandernics?12:09
Kiallnetwork cards12:09
Leanderah, what if they have only one?12:09
KiallBecause they assume you want multi-node networking, they install nova-network and nova-api on each compute node. But this nova-api is there a byproduct, to basically fix a bug. They are not there to serve API requests and should not be listed as API endpoints in keystone12:10
KiallLeander: then those scripts probably wont work, as the requirements section in the readme says ;)12:11
KiallIts probably easy enough to amend them for 1 NIC, but I've never tried a 1 NIC setup so have no idea what changes are needed12:12
Leanderdoes the controller require two network cards as well?12:12
KiallIf its not running nova-network or nova-compute, it should be fine with 112:13
Leanderwait, o you're telling me i can have a controller without nova-network?12:13
Leanderso*12:14
smulcahyif a user creates a snapshot - is it difficult to move that to be a standard image available for others to use?12:14

uksysadminKiall: there is @ uksysadmin.wordpress.com but its woefully out of date... could be a good place to start, but the cssoss stuff is better12:19

Leanderthx, but in regard to my question, the controller node does not require the  nova-network component then?12:21
KiallLeander: That depends on the choices you make, if you use multi-node networking, then no. If you don't use multi-node networking, then maybe.12:22
Leanderi see12:22
Leanderi can still use VLANs with one network interface right?12:22
KiallHave a read of that doc, especially the section that describes what each service is, you seem to be confused over what the services do..12:23
KiallI've never tried to install OS with 1 NIC, I have no clue if its possible or not with VLAN networking..12:23
KiallI've heard it is with FlatDHCP rather than VLAN networking, but never used that either...12:24
Leanderfunny thing, now that i think about it, my previous setups were all configured with the assumption that there were two network interfaces12:25

Spirilisput it on a private vlan or segment that isn't managed by DHCP21:08
Spirilisand if the "floating IP" segment you use is within the dhcp-managed address space, make sure you "reserve" the appropriate block of IPs for those floating IPs so openstack can manage them without any other hosts accidentally taking them21:08

warikhow can I select one specific ip to allocate from my range of floating ips? because I am using euca-allocate-address, and this command give my the ups in order23:14
warikthank you!23:15
kbringardthere may be a better way, but the way I've always done it is to mark all the IPs before it in the DB as deleted = 123:15
kbringardallocate it23:15
kbringardthen go back and mark the ones you changed as deleted = 0 again23:15
