_val_ | is it the same as Glance vs Swift? | 14:27 |
_val_ | User > Glance > Swift ? | 14:28 |
manu1 | zynzel: I'll try turning debugging on and see if anything else pops up | 14:28 |
zynzel | _val_: smth like that ;) glance can use other backend (swift, file, s3) | 14:29 |
manu1 | _val_: From what I understand, Swift is like a big distributed hard drive - it just stores blobs of data. | 14:29 |
manu1 | _val_: Glance is a bit more specific, in that it specifically stores virtual machine images (kernels, ramdisks, etc.) | 14:30 |
_val_ | what is meant by "Swift: Redundant storage of static objects" | 14:30 |
_val_ | manu1: but a virtual machine disk e.g qcow2 format stores these things all in one. A device block | 14:31 |
manu1 | _val_: When you store something to Swift, it is usually copied to multiple machines... it's like RAID | 14:31 |
manu1 | _val_: Glance can store machine images in multiple different formats, from what I gather. So you can use qcow2, or all the files separately, etc. | 14:31 |

_val_ | manu1: very well indeed! Thanks! | 14:32 |
zynzel | _val_: imagine this situation: apache is frontend, it serves you static content (like glance) | 14:32 |

_val_ | manu1: allright. So glance is actually the frontend.. and when you require an image it will get from the storage managed by swift? | 14:34 |
manu1 | _val_: Yes, that is one way to run Glance. Glance can also run in a mode where it just stores it to disk on the server that Glance is running on. | 14:35 |
manu1 | _val_: Swift is useful when you have thousands of machines and need high-throughput and high-availability for your base VM images. | 14:35 |

_val_ | manu1: E.g I'm a client and I want to change OS. Let's say Ubuntu to Fedora. How would this happen in the background? | 14:38 |
manu1 | _val_: Swift /is like/ RAID - you don't need to use RAID-1 when you setup Swift. You can, but you don't have to. Some would argue that RAID-1 under Swift would not be a good use of disks (not economical) | 14:38 |

manu1 | _val_: I'm not an OpenStack developer, so take this with a grain of salt... but I believe when you boot an image, the nova-api is hit first. The nova-api then needs to look up the image you specified, so it uses the glance-api and glance-registry to do so. If it finds out that the Fedora image is stored on Swift, it then makes a call to swift to retrieve the image, then boots the instance. | 14:42 |

pmullaney_ | Hi all, I am trying to do a single node devstack install, which I have had working in the past, I am running into a problem uploading a kernel to glance. What I have looked at so far points towards the keystone direction. I've run the curl command in the devstack script that obtains the credentials and the result token keeps changing - normal? See http://paste.openstack.org/show/13875/ | 21:39 |
pmullaney_ | should have mentioned that this happens with essex and trunk branches | 21:41 |
