swinchenDoes anyone have a bit of time to help me with a problem getting volumes to attach after a server reboot?00:33

swinchenNo matter what I do I can not get a volume to attach after the server is rebooted.  It seems to be stuck in the "in-use" state and can not be detached.  I know there is/was a bug about nova volumes not attaching after a reboot, but my log files do not have the same erros.00:39

alex88i'm transferring something to a vm with scp, at 30MB/s, the source vm load is 0.7, the destination vm load is 5…. is that normal?08:09

Lesebusing scp is not a good bandwidth test08:10
alex88Leseb, not testing bandwidth, i need to move a 86gb file for migration08:11
alex88just think that such load is unusual for just a file transfer, also in iostat w_await is 2k+08:11
Lesebmy point is, you loose a lot of performance if you use scp08:11
alex88and i'm not using a shared fs08:11
alex88performance about vm resources or are you just talking about transferring speed?08:12
Lesebbah everything transferred with scp required encryption so no it's not surprising to me08:12
Lesebboth08:12
Lesebare impacted08:12
*** reed has quit IRC08:12
Lesebyou should opt for nc + cat if you want to increase the speed08:13
Lesebbut that solution wasn't so reliable for me during my benchs08:13
Lesebscp is way slower but it works08:13
alex88my idea was to debug why the load is that much in one and so low in another..because the destination vm is like death.. takes 30 seconds to open a new screen08:13
Lesebusually decryption is faster than encryption that what I noticed too08:14
alex88yup, also so high await time isn't usual, on host it's like 20, on vm 2k...08:15

melmothah.. you canT09:09
melmothsorry i misread you on the firs sentence.09:09
melmothi guess you already changed the policy to allow port 22 ?09:10
SkyManmelmoth: Of course, i am not that noob,09:11
melmothseveral nova-network or one ?09:11
SkyManmelmoth: i can ping it too, but when ever i use my private key to access a VM, it keeps on asking for a password, i am using ubuntu cloud image09:11
SkyManmelmoth: i have 7 nodes which one of them is a controller node09:12
melmothahh. so your ssh client can connect to the vm's server port 22.09:12
SkyManmelmoth: so basically i have 7 nova-network09:12
*** andreafrittoli has joined #openstack09:12
melmothSkyMan, how did you boot the vms ? i am assuming you mention a ssh key ?09:13
melmothafter i booted an instance, i connect to it using the ssh key i mention _as the ubuntu_ user : ssh -i mykey.priv ubuntu@vms.floating.ip09:13
melmothwhen this fail because the key is not accepted, the next step i check is the console of the vm, to see if it was communicating all right with the metadata server09:14
SkyManmelmoth: of course, you know what, i took down a node, i installed openstack on it (single host install), and i can access vms with floating IPs, i think the problem is due to multi host install09:14
SkyManmelmoth: i think that my compute nodes are not getting meta data :(09:15
melmothyou can check that looking at the console of your vms09:15
SkyManmelmoth: ok i will now09:15
melmothyou should see some timeout error if it s the case09:15

melmothi have no idea hwo things works with this image, may be it s not beahving the same way as the ubuntu ones09:25
p3N74d4V1dhey melmoth, any idea where snapshots are stored with nova??09:27
melmothnope. i m not even sure i understand what a snapshot is.09:28
andreafrittolisnapshot is an image of root disk stored in glance09:28
SkyManmelmoth: it's an offical cirros image, when i start a vm on the single node openstack, i can access it through its floating IP, but when i start a VM on the multi node OpenStack, i can't access the VM through its floating IP :(09:29

melmothSkyMan, i do not understand if you cannot connect to the ip port 22, or if you can but the key is not recognised09:30
melmothif it s the first problem, use tcpdump to check if the nat is done correctly (source ip should be the one of the current node running nova-network)09:31

SkyManandreafrittoli: I did but its still the same result09:34
SkyManmelmoth: i found this in the openstack docs : Another common issue is you cannot ping or SSH your instances after issuing the ‘euca-authorize’ commands. Something to look at is the amount of ‘dnsmasq’ processes that are running. If you have a running instance, check to see that TWO ‘dnsmasq’ processes are running. If not, perform the following:09:34
*** nati_uen_ has joined #openstack09:34
alex88SkyMan, if you can ssh vm already has the address, so it's not a dnsmasq issue09:36
alex88and yeah, you should try with an ubuntu image09:36
*** toxboi` is now known as toxboi09:37
melmothSkyMan, you told "i can connec to port 22", so it s probably something else.09:37
SkyManalex88:  i did , i swear i did try every image possible but it is still not recognizing the key :(09:37
SkyManmelmoth alex88 andreafrittoli : it's an offical cirros image, when i start a vm on the single node openstack, i can access it through its floating IP, but when i start a VM on the multi node OpenStack, i can't access the VM through its floating IP :(09:38
SkyMani dont know why my compute nodes don't recognize the key :(09:38
*** nati_ueno has quit IRC09:39
alex88SkyMan, it's not a compute node problem, it's a vm one, as soon as you're actually really connecting to the vm, you should try to use tcpdump to see where the packets are going to09:40
alex88someone knows if i can use something else then qcow2 for instances?09:40
*** ondergetekende has joined #openstack09:42
andreafrittoliskyman alex88 yes it could be a routing problem if you're not actually getting to the VM you'll get a prompt for the password. you can also try to login on the compute node and try ssh using the private IP from there09:42
SkyManandreafrittoli: i can access the VM using its  fixed IP but not its floating one !09:44
*** aswadrangnekar has quit IRC09:45
andreafrittoliskyman so something is wrong with the routing / nat setup for your floating IP - your floating IP does not actually map to your VM that's why you get the prompt for password - try troubleshoot with iptables and or tcpdump09:46
alex88SkyMan, are you using multi_host?09:46
SkyManmelmoth : is there some command to make the instance start on a specific host, say node X ?09:46
SkyManalex88: yea i have 7 nodes :)09:46
melmothi think there is... but i dont know if on top of my head09:47
alex88SkyMan, the network you created has multi_host? are you running nova-network on all of them? is the ip floating ip pointing to that node?09:47
melmothi wonder if it somehting to do with nova boot --hint so you tell the scheduler wich box to choose09:47
SkyManalex88: yes i am running nova-network on all nodes and the floating IP is pointing to the VM not the node !09:48
SkyManmelmoth: i tried --hint host = nodeX but didnt seem to work09:48
melmothi think i had the same issue last (and single) time i try actually09:48
SkyManalex88: shouldn't i install nova-network on the compute nodes ?09:49
alex88SkyMan, the floating ip should be routed to that host, go on that host and run an "iptables -t nat -L -n | grep SNAT"09:49
alex88it's correct09:49
melmothof you are running on multi host, you need nova-network on each compute nodes.09:49
SkyManalex88: i will do it right away09:49
SkyManmelmoth: thanks :)09:49
melmoth(and you better install nova-api too, or else create an iptables tules that redirect communication to the metadata server manyally)09:50
alex88or nova-api-metadata only09:50
alex88and in nova conf set 127.0.0.1 as api address09:50
melmothi never understood the difference between all those packages nova-api nova-api-metadata and so on09:50

swinchenwhat are the /var/lib/nova/instances/_base/UUID_DISKSIZE files for?  It looks nova resizes the stock images to the selected flavor, BUT the disk image in the instance directory uses UUID as a backing file, not UUID_DISKSIZE.   Is that clear?18:03
